Sports teams in Montreal
Montreal is home to three major professional sports teams.
Le Club de hockey Canadien de Montréal dates back to 1909. The team was one of the most successful professional sports clubs of the 20th century, having brought home 24 Stanley Cups between 1916 and 1993. The team – also known as the Habs, Les Glorieux, Le Tricolore and La Sainte-Flanelle – is part of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The regular NHL hockey season runs from September till April, with the Stanley Cup playoffs finishing up in June. Unofficially, scalpers always sell tickets outside the Bell Centre before games start.
The Montreal Alouettes play in the East Division of the Canadian Football League. The annual championship is called the Grey Cup and the regular season is from July to November. The Alouettes play downtown at the Molson Stadium, near the corner of Pine Avenue and Park Avenue beside McGill University, and occasionally at the Olympic Stadium. The Impact de Montréal soccer team plays in the North American USL First Division. The team was founded in in 1993 by the Saputo family. Games have been played at the Claude-Robillard sports complex, but the Saputo family is building a new soccer stadium near Sherbrooke and Viau, expected to be ready for next season.
