As a European style settlement, Montreal traces its history back to the foundation of Ville-Marie on May 18, 1642 when Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance, along with the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, set up a colony in the spot now called Place Royale in Old Montreal. Officially they came to convert the heathen; some clearly had their eye more on the profit to be made from the fur trade, or were hoping to use the new settlement as a base for further exploration of the unknown continent.

This anniversary of Montreal's establishment meshes neatly with the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation in 1867, which will also involve festivities of various kinds.
